Our Affiliations

Singapore’s Co-operative Movement is well represented by SNCF’s active participation in various International and Regional Organisations.

It is an affiliate of the following international, regional and national organisations.

ASEAN Co-operative Organisation (ACO)

The ASEAN Co-operative Organisation (ACO) was established on 6 December 1973, during the first ASEAN Co-operative Conference in Jakarta, Indonesia, comprising National Unions and National Federations or apex organisations of Co-operative societies from ASEAN countries.

In line with the spirit of the Association of South-East Asian Nations, its main objectives are to promote close collaboration amongst the movements of member countries and to accelerate the growth and progress of Co-operative activity through common endeavours and joint ventures.

International Co-operative Alliance (ICA)

The International Co-operative Alliance is an independent, non-governmental association which unites, represents and serves co-operatives worldwide.

The ICA was founded in London in 1895. Its members are national and international co-operative organisations in all sectors of activity including agriculture, banking, energy, industry, insurance, fisheries, housing, tourism and consumer co-operatives. ICA has about 220 member organisations from 86 countries, representing more than 800 million individuals worldwide.

In 1946, the ICA was one of the first non-governmental organisations to be accorded United Nations Consultative Status. Today, it holds the highest level of consultative status (General Category) with the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC).

The major objective of the ICA is to promote and strength autonomous co-operatives throughout the world. Through actions taken at the international, regional and national levels, the ICA also seeks to:
• promote and protect co-operative values and principles;
• facilitate the development of economic and other mutually beneficial relations between its member organisations;
• further the economic and social progress of its members and their communities.

Association of Asian Confederation of Credit Unions (ACCU)

The Association of Asian Confederation of Credit Unions (ACCU) is the Asian regional based representative organisation of credit co-operatives/unions. Its mission is to promote and strengthen credit unions so as to enable them to fulfil their objective in meeting the social and economic needs of their members. It aims to accomplish this mission through the provision of technical assistance, training and information to its member credit unions. SNCF, on behalf of its Credit Sector, was affiliated to ACCU in 1998. ACCU currently represents 15 national credit unions from 13 countries in Asia and nine affiliate members promoting credit unions/co-operatives in Asia.

WORLD COUNCIL OF CREDIT UNIONS (WOCCU)

The World Council of Credit Unions (WOCCU) is the global trade association and development agency for credit unions. WOCCU promotes the sustainable development of credit unions and other financial co-operatives around the world to empower people through access to high quality and affordable financial services. WOCCU advocates on behalf of the global credit union system before international organisations and works with national governments to improve legislation and regulation. Its technical assistance programs introduce new tools and technologies to strengthen credit unions' financial performance and increase their outreach. Worldwide, more than 46,000 credit unions in 97 countries serve 172 million people. The regional and national credit union and financial co-operative associations affiliated with WOCCU represent 73 countries across the globe. SNCF, on behalf of its Credit Sector, is the first national-level organisation from Southeast Asia to become a direct member of WOCCU from 1 January 2010.

Consumers Association of Singapore (CASE)

The consumer movement was ignited in 1969, a time of escalating prices and unfair consumer practices, by several civic conscious consumers and the National Trades Union Congress (NTUC) with the objective of protecting and promoting consumers’ interest. The acceptance of the movement led to the formation of the Consumers Association of Singapore (CASE) in 1971. Since then, CASE has been active and involved in standing up for consumers’ rights and responsibilities. Committed to the cause, CASE mission is to protect and enhance consumers’ interest through information and education, and to promote an environment of fair and ethical trade practices.

SINGAPORE COMPACT FOR CSR

The Singapore Compact for Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is a national society committed in bringing the CSR movement forward in Singapore. Launched by the National Tripartite Initiative (NTI) on CSR steering committee in January 2005, the Singapore Compact functions as a multi-stakeholder platform in recognising the role and contributions of all CSR stakeholders.

The key mission is to broaden the base for collaboration between various stakeholders, in developing coordinated and effective strategies to promote CSR in Singapore.

Singapore Compact is also participant and focal point of the United Nations (UN) Global Compact, the world's largest corporate citizenship initiative, in enhancing corporate practices through ongoing dialogues, networking, seminars, training, collaboration and practical project implementation. It will continue to play a pivotal role in defining the direction and landscape of CSR in Singapore and the region, and help Singapore embrace CSR.
