Naina is a member of Silver Caregivers Co-operative Limited and a recipient of the Extraordinaire Caregiver Award 2018.

As a daughter, I just want to see my dad healthy again.

Ms Naina Shah had to stop her import and export business in 2015 when her father's health took a turn for the worse. He suffered from cancer, heart disease and stroke.

Her dad, despite his illness, was mentally active, and they spent quality time together playing cards, talking about common interests and such. He was bed-ridden for over a year before he passed away in 2017. As for her 80-year-old mother, she has asthma, high blood pressure, knee problems, and depression.

Despite having a helper, Naina is still the primary caretaker. She said that while her helper is good at the job, it is her responsibility as a daughter to look after her parents. To make ends meet, Naina works part-time.

I didn't think about how I can overcome the challenges I faced when I was taking care of my parents. I just went through it.

Even with her busy schedule, Naina has found time to volunteer with the Singapore Jain Religious Society where she organises activities for the seniors. For her compassion and dedication in helping others, especially the elderly, Naina was presented with the Extraordinaire Caregiver Award 2018 from Silver Caregivers Co-operative.

As a strong advocate for taking care of others, Naina highlighted that the two most important qualities for a caretaker to have are compassion and patience.

When you have the patience to understand the struggles of those you are taking care of, there's less likely a chance for you to be frustrated.
