Mr Bachik Sgs Coop K V2In 1961, Mr Yusuf Bin Bachik joined the healthcare sector. To him, it was never just a job but a career where he could learn and take pride in. He recalled: “My salary, when I joined the Singapore General Hospital (SGH) in 1961 as a medical and health civil servant, was just $97 a month. But it was a job that I took great pride in and I stayed on till I retired at the age of 57.”

The same year, Mr Yusuf joined the Singapore Government Staff (SGS) Credit Co-operative as a member at the encouragement of his colleagues as he believed in giving back to society. “I was introduced to the Society through my colleagues, many of whom were members”, he said. Years have passed since then and he never looked back. He became a member of the Committee of Management (COM) of SGS Credit Co-operative in 1980 as he wanted to serve the co-operative more actively and Honorary Assistant Secretary in 2003. COM is responsible for driving the co-operative’s strategic mission to promote savings, and provide financial security, maximise financial growth and deepen a sense of belonging among members, management and staff.

“I am glad that I have had the opportunity to serve members through the Management Committee. Having come from a humble background, I understand the plight of junior public employees. I hope to continue serving as long as I can,” he declared.

Indeed, Mr Yusuf lived to his words, serving in COM of SGS Credit Co-operative for 40 years until his death on 5 December 2018.

Chairman of SGS Credit Co-operative Mr John Raghavan, PB, PBS said: “Mr Yusuf was a co-operator to his last breath. He had a strong sense of service to the Society, actively involving in the activities of SGS Credit Co-operative since 1961. Many people in the credit co-operative circle are acquainted with him and will definitely miss him. We all at SGS Credit Co-operative will fondly remember him for his good demeanour, commitment and contributions to the co-operative.”
